Faith to Bless

by Lena Larsen

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!” (Psalm 103:1, ESV)

A former pastor of mine often spoke of following Christ as a matter of mind, emotion and will—all three being equally important (Mathew 22:37). So, I know, in theory at least, that my faith is not just a matter for my heart and my mind, but also key to my actions.

The way I live out faith is hugely dependent on what or whom I am putting my faith in. Recently the One I’ve put my faith in has been reminding me that He is Yahweh—the LORD. He has “established His throne in the heavens and His kingdom rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19) Remembering who He is makes it easier to respond in faith-motivated action. David calls “all that is within me” to bless the LORD. But there are definitely parts of me that don’t want to, things in my life that don’t seem to deserve a “blessing” response.

But He is my LORD. He has the right to do as He sees fit. My mind acknowledges this. And He is not an angry or spiteful Lord (Psalm 103:8-10), but loving and compassionate, a healer, forgiver, renewer, redeemer (Psalm 103:2-8). This stirs my heart and softens it.

If this is where my faith lies—with this gracious and merciful LORD—then I must act.

I will bless the LORD.

Warmly in Christ,

Lena Larsen

For Reflection:

“Bless the Lord, O you His angels,

you mighty ones who do His word,

obeying the voice of His word!

Bless the Lord, all His hosts,

His ministers, who do His will!

Bless the Lord, all His works,

in all places of His dominion.

Bless the Lord, O my soul!” (Psalm 103:20-22, ESV)

  1. Ask God what He wants you to know or remember about having Him as your LORD today.
  2. Is there an area where you’re living with a disconnect between your mind, emotions and will?
  3. What would you like to “bless the Lord” for today?
