Creative Personal Reflection Prompts for RENEW
Movement + Prayer
Grab different embroidery floss colors that are pleasing to you and start creating a bracelet. With each knot, braid, addition take time to create a list of topics you’re pondering with God. As you continue, take moments of silence to listen to Him respond, only moving your hands in rhythm, but listening for Him to speak. What do you notice? What is He saying?
Thanksgiving Collage
With the multicolored paper, scissors, glue, and another sheet of white paper, create a collage of colors and writing as a practice of thanksgiving to God. Within each shape, write something you’re thankful for, wondering, want to give to God, etc. Create a collage in conversation with God.
Psalms + Color
With watercolor supplies, create a painting based on emotions within your favorite/chosen Psalm. Try choosing colors that represent the range of emotions portrayed in the Psalm and creating long lines of color to fill whatever-sized paper you’re using. With each line, perhaps thought in the Psalm choose a color that represents the feeling from the words. Ponder on the words as you create your line of color. How is it making you feel? Once finished, look at the painting as a whole, notice the colors your eyes are drawn to, what the overall feeling of the paper is – is it lighter or darker? Is it broken into chunks of color? Do the colors alternate a lot? (Could also use crayons, markers, strips of paper to do this same practice)
Word Art
Perhaps God has a specific word for your year, for this time with Him. Write that word on a sheet of paper and use the materials (color, other paper, etc.). to create whatever you’d like as you think on that word. Are there passages of Scripture God is wanting to interact with you through as you create based on this word? Is there a prayer or request you’d like to offer or ask Him as you create? Take the time to create and interact with Him.
Symbols in Scripture
Find a parable/teaching or proverb or psalm in Scripture. As you read it and go through the passage, create little pen/pencil drawings of all the symbols you read. Perhaps using these symbols you’ve created as hints or a guide, try to memorize a verse or small passage of Scripture.
Slow Down and Color
Grab an adult coloring page and spend time slowly coloring. Notice what stirs in you as you color. As different thoughts surface, bring them to God. Try switching colors as you go between speaking and listening.
What Shapes You
What’s your favorite shape? Choose an art supply you would enjoy and create this shape as many times and in as many ways as you would like. As you create this shape, have a conversation with God around what is shaping you in this season. Ask Him about how He is transforming this shape.
Immersed in His Love
As you ponder this Scripture, what images come to mind? Then, grab some supplies and bring this to life.
“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God” (Ephesians 3:16-19 NLT).
Honest Prayers
How would you describe your soul today? What would it look like in a visual form? What are the colors of it and what would those colors represent? Choose the supplies that help bring this image to life. As you create, know that God is with you in this place. Notice in this time if it lends itself to conversation with Him or even silent prayer of being with Him as He is with you.
Nature Declares His Glory
“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world” (Psalm 19:1-4 NLT).
How have you seen the glory of the Lord in the world around you? Think of an aspect of nature and recreate this through the supplies provided.
