Sharing God’s love

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. -1 John 4:8

Making mixed CDs was all the rage when I was in middle school. There was something so enjoyable about collecting songs on your computer, selecting and arranging them, then copying them onto CDs to share with friends.

If I put the effort into sharing music with friends in this way, it was a sign to them that I cared about them enough to share something with them that brought me joy, in the hopes that it would bring them joy as well.

I was never sure what they would think of the music, but it was exciting to think that maybe they would appreciate it the same as me and that in some way it would make their lives just a little bit better.

I guess in some ways that’s how God has wired me to share the Gospel. In the same ways that I want to share music with people, I want to share God’s love with them.

In the same way that music to me is not a set of logical beliefs, knowing God goes far beyond knowing a set of things about Him. If I share God with people in a way that is not a list of rules to follow or things to believe, it invites people to connect with God on a level that is meaningful to them, just like it is to me.

When I share the Gospel with someone it tends to follow this kind of logic:  God’s love shows up for me like this, and it’d be awesome if you experienced God and accepted His love in a way that is personal to you, too!

Now, maybe this seems like a more passive way to share God with people, but it can help me to frame the Gospel in a way that the person with whom I’m sharing it might understand and make up their mind about Him, not just take on a set of beliefs because it’s what we might theologically think is correct in our minds, but to start a personal and deep friendship with God in our hearts.

I want those I share with to know God’s love. He is love. If they’ve ever experienced love, it’s because God exists. And not only does He exist, but He is a person. A person who loves perfectly. A person who cares. A person who wants to deeply know and love every person and vice versa.

So, with my mix-CD-style of sharing the Gospel, I hope I can share God’s love with others. I hope I can invite them in to know God for the first time or to know Him better.

Because God is love, He is a person, and He is for everyone.

Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, (Ephesian 6:20, NIV)
